Paper Ballots vs EVMs — are Paper ballots old school or less bad?

Disclaimer: This post is educational, for public debate/awareness. It reflects my personal analysis. No intent to defame anyone or any institution

1. The PM manages a ₹50 lakh crore budget. That creates a massive incentive to rig elections.

2. In politics, there are Kings (party leaders) and Kingmakers (wealthy elites – owners of banks, oil, pharma & sponsors of paid media).

3. Kings can’t rig directly (risk of exposure), but Kingmakers can do it for them to get kickbacks & favorable laws.

4. Kingmakers understand the benefit of diversification so they can have their puppet Kings across all major political parties.

EVM Route:

5. India has 18 lakh EVMs. The microcontroller chips are made abroad (Netherlands, NXP Technologies). This creates a single-point vulnerability.

6. Law does not allow voters to open and test EVMs. Even the source code not public. Why?

7. 15 days before polls, a BEL technician loads candidate names/symbols into EVMs via laptop. This laptop is linked to central servers.

8. With just 5-10 dishonest insiders, any malicious code can silently sent from server. We don’t know if its being sent or not, but it is a possibility that cannot be denied.

9. Mock polls are not effective as code can be time-triggered (e.g. Start at 11PM & auto delete)

Paper Ballot Route:

10. For 2024 elections, Bharat had 10.5 lakh booths × 5 staff = 50 lakh officers.

11. Now to to rig, Kingmakers need (2x) the manforce i.e. 1 crore goons across 800 districts & 20,000 Pincodes in India.

12. Today, voters can record tampering on cameras/smartphones. This was not possible in 1950s. Hence, USA had open voting for 92 years between 1792 and 1884. In these 92 years, using open voting, an average American elected about 18 presidents.

13. If few booths are compromised, re-polls can easily be ordered at those booths. It is traceable & detectable.

14. If votes are stolen via malicious codes in EVMs there is no trace, we won’t even know that votes have been stolen as it is a computer program.

15. Techo advanced countries like US, Germany, Japan, and China with 100 crore voter base use paper ballots. Why?

16. Paper ballots certainly have flaws but can be improved with (a) livestreaming + (b) CCTVs + (c) larger booths + (d) same day, same place counting.

Conclusion:

17. EVM supporters tuck their tail & run away when you ask them to opine on the following:

“The current setup of EVMs with Black Glass, Light Senor and central server based symbol loading can allow 5-10 dishonest insiders to manipulate 20% to 30% of votes”

18. Another breed of blockchain talkers throw fancy labels but never show a “working election procedure draft using blockchain” – Bihar votes in 50 days, we can’t live in fantasies.

19. For a Kingmaker, rigging EVMs needs just 2-3 programmers & 5-10 insiders, but rigging paper ballots demand – 1 crore goons across 800 districts – risky, visible & impossible to hide in CAMERA world.

20. Re-read points 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 14 atleast TWICE to understand – potential risk with EVMs.

22. As a taxpaying citizen, I prefer paper ballots, I don’t prefer EVMs with BLACK GLASS & LIGHT SENSORS. Best course of action is OPEN voting that USA had for 90+ years so there is no risk of vote theft and cost of elections is minimal, few ruppees per voter.
