In 2019, I was jobless.
I had quit my job, stayed at home in Kalyan (not South Bombay), swimming and preparing for exams.
I had no references, no network, no family background in consulting.
– My father taught in a government college.
– My mother is a homemaker.
– They had no clue what consulting was.
A friend of mine had just joined EY. I requested her for the HR email ID. She shared it.
– I sent a cold email.
– I interviewed for a Forensics role & got rejected as “not suitable.”
– Two months later, the HR reached out again – this time for a Financial Due Diligence role.
– I said yes, got shortlisted, and joined (even with a pay cut).
Fast forward → 2 promotions in 2 years at EY
If I had not sent that one email, I would have never entered EY.
Today, in 2025, I work at Kroll.
While going through old emails, I found this message from an EY Partner in AI & Consulting.
I worked in Finance & He works in AI.
Yet I have the privilege of his support because over time, I networked outside my immediate domain and built genuine relationships.
2019: I didn’t know a single person at EY.
2025: I have 20+ Partners from all Big4s on my WhatsApp. If I ever need a job, I just have to ping them.
If I could build this network from scratch with no family connections, no Tier 1 city advantage, no initial network – you can do it too.
It all starts with one email, one request, one application!
