Welcome to Decentralised Success Story Series Episode 6
As part of my Decentralised Success Story series, meet my all-time favorite teacher & mentor Hari Ramasubramanian
Today, parents spend lakhs on private schooling. But Hari Sir?
He studied at SK Patil school in Dombivli (Mumbai), paying just ₹120 per month for his entire schooling – right up to 10th standard.
He comes from a modest family – his father, a diploma holder in mechanical engineering, and his mother, a homemaker, both migrated from small towns of Tamil Nadu.
They lived in a 1RK (one-room kitchen) at Dombivli and yet, what emerged from there is nothing short of extraordinary.
He cleared his CA in the very first attempt, securing multiple All India Ranks.
After a brief corporate stint, 𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 – 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.
He began teaching CA students at the legendary Enkay’s Classes in Kalyan, where he quickly became one of the most popular and respected teachers.
That’s where I met him.
I learnt my fundamentals of Accounting from Hariharan Sir and NK Sir and honestly, I owe a huge part of my analytical thinking and financial modeling foundation to both of them.
But what made Hariharan Sir truly special was his love for mathematics.
He didn’t just teach – he made us think.
Some of his legendary derivations still stay with me:
• How continuous compounding emerges from the concept of limits
• The economic logic behind EOQ and how it’s derived mathematically
• How computers actually compute IRR
• What integration really means (not just “derivative ka ulta”)
And despite being a teacher, he was approachable and fun.
He even played cricket with us after class! (He is also an ICC certified coach)
But his journey didn’t stop there.
He went on to complete his PhD in Management Accounting from Michigan State University (USA)
He is also a CMA – Certified Management Accountant: CMA®
Today, he is working as an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management (Germany).
He is also a co-founder & Head of Academic Affairs at the Raising A Mathematician Foundation, an NGO that nurtures logical thinking and real-life applications of mathematics.
I was deeply honoured when he personally invited me to teach his students how concepts like prime numbers can be applied using Excel to solve business problems.
Despite his incredible achievements, he remains one of the most modest, grounded, and inspiring people I’ve ever met.
CA with Rank + PhD from the US + Professor in Germany + Cofounder of NGO, what an inspiring journey!
Truly proud to feature him in my Decentralised Success Story series.
