A brand once deducted TDS from my freelancing payment… but never deposited it.
Last year, I had written a LinkedIn promo post. Lets say the fee was ₹10,000. They paid me ₹9,000 and kept ₹1,000 as TDS (10% convention)
I trusted them. After all, TDS is routine, right?
Months later, my CA Thofik Tufel checked my 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝟮𝟲𝗔𝗦 and discovered the fraud – TDS was deducted but never deposited.
The agency simply pocketed it. When I followed up, they didn’t even bother to reply.
That’s when I realised:
As Stalin once said “Who votes doesn’t matter. Who counts the votes matters.”
Similarly: “TDS deducted doesn’t matter. TDS deposited does.”
In India’s broken laws, these frauds slip through easily.
Don’t let someone else’s lethargy trap you. Even small one-time payments can become a headache if ignored.
And unless you check, you’re the one who pays the price.
👉 CA Thofik Tufel gave me tips, sharing – What you can do! First hire a professional or
– Check your Form 26AS regularly.
– Always ask for Form 16A after every payment.
– To avoid interest and penalties, pay ADVANCE TAX under Section 208
I got lucky because Thofik Tufel caught it in time. Many don’t.
Has this ever happened to you (TDS deducted but not deposited)?
